He didn’t come to promote a hit — he came to honor his son.
When Craig Morgan stepped onto The Kelly Clarkson Show stage, few in the audience knew the weight he was carrying.
Then the music started.
Oklahoma country music star Blake Shelton surprised his longtime friend and fellow Grand Ole Opry member Craig Morgan this week on “The Kelly Clarkson Show,” where Morgan gave a heartrending performance of his new song, “The Father, My Son, And The Holy Ghost.”
Morgan also talked on the show about the inspiration for the emotional ode to his son Jerry, who died three years ago in a drowning accident at age 19. Shelton, Clarkson and fellow guest Eva Mendes were obviously moved when Morgan performed the song on Thursday’s “The Kelly Clarkson Show.”
The song made national news last month, hitting No. 1 on iTunes All Genres Top Songs chart in addition to the Top Country Songs chart, after Shelton launched an intense social media campaign in support of the song, initially tweeting he would “gladly give up my spot on country radio to get this song on.”
The viral push gained support from several other artists and celebrities, including Clarkson, Shelton’s girlfriend Gwen Stefani, Blanco Brown, Luke Combs, Carson Daly, Ellen DeGeneres, Charles Esten, Larry The Cable Guy, Angie Harmon, Cole Swindell, the “Today” show and more.
Ahead of “The Father, My Son, And The Holy Ghost” topping the iTunes chart and finding early support at country radio in key markets such as Atlanta, Boston, Miami, Pittsburgh, Tampa and national airplay on Music Choice and Sirius XM, Morgan filmed a music video for the song at his family’s The Gallery At Morgan Farms in downtown Dickson, Tennessee.
Shelton launched a viral campaign to get the song heard, offering to give up his own airplay. It soared to #1 on iTunes, backed by an outpouring of love from Gwen Stefani, Luke Combs, Ellen DeGeneres, and fans across the country.
In a world of noise, this song cut straight through — reminding us all that grief, when shared, becomes something more: connection. Hope. Healing.
And now, the performance that left everyone speechless is being called one of the most powerful moments on television this year.
